How to Maintain Pervious Pavement

Keep your permeable pavement clean and strong with these tips!

Pervious pavement, also known as porousasphalt, has a porous surface that leads to an underground drainage system of rocks and sand that lets rainwater pass through easily, preventing flooding aboveground. Pervious pavement can become clogged very quickly; in fact, its entire lifespan has a shorter expected lifespan than traditional asphalt pavement. How can you maintain pervious pavement so that it exceeds those expectations?

3 Ways to Maintain Pervious Pavement

Sweeping

One method is mechanical sweeping, which brushes debris like twigs, leaves, and dirt into a hopper for disposal. The problem with sweeping is that although it can do a good job of removing large swathes of loose material, it is more likely to brush tiny particles into the pores of the pavement, thus exacerbating the problem.

Blowing

Another option is to use a blower to remove all those fine particles and large debris from its surface. A blower will be able to make the majority of those bits of ash, dirt, leaves, and other matter airborne. Even so, there is still a chance that some fine debris will still be stuck in the asphalt’s pores.

Vacuuming

Yet another possibility is to vacuum the surface with an appropriate industrial vacuum. This method is the smartest. It will completely remove large and small debris from the pavement’s surface, removing the possibility of dirt getting stuck where it needs to be clear.

Additional Steps for Maintaining Porous Asphalt

Chemical Cleaning

In addition to vacuuming away the loose debris, you will also need to complete these other two steps for a thoroughly well-maintained porous pavement. Applying a specialized chemical cleaner will aid in breaking down and draining out any more debris that is still stuck in the asphalt’s permeable surface.

Applying a Binder

Finally, you will need to apply a binder, a special kind ofasphalt sealer, over the clean asphalt periodically to fortify it. As a permeable material, it is susceptible tobreaking down faster than traditional pavement and benefits greatly from this treatment.
