The question may have more nuances to it than you think. When replacing or building your driveway, you can start completely fresh. Is asphalt or concrete better for your driveway in Maryland? Tri-State Paving can help you make the most informed decision. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!
Asphalt vs. Concrete
Temperature
Asphalt and concrete have their strengths and weaknesses. Asphalt holds up better in very cold climates, whereas concrete withstands hot temperatures better, especially since its naturally lighter color reflects heat and stays cool. Asphalt can melt under very high temperatures. In Maryland, we are more likely to have very hot summers rather than frigid winters, but your decision can also depend on how much sun exposure your driveway has.
Maintenance
Both concrete and asphalt are porous materials, although asphalt might be less porous than concrete. Either way, sealing the pavement every few years will keep dirt, moisture, and spills of other kinds from seeping into it. Also, keep in mind that black asphalt can hide dirt and stains better than pale gray concrete.
Repair Difficulty
If you go with poured concrete, you can expect long-lasting pavement, but cracks can be more difficult to repair. If you use concrete pavers, that is a different story altogether. It is easy to replace individual pavers and make it look good as new.
Asphalt will show its age after many repairs over time, but it is possible to resurface it rather than replace it entirely. Asphalt is generally easier to repair with crack filling and pothole filling.
Customization
Asphalt and concrete have more similar customization options than most know. Unlike what you hear most places online, you actually have plenty of customization options with asphalt. Stamped asphalt allows you to have different colored pavement and the appearance of pavers. Tri-State Paving knows all about it and can make it a reality for your driveway, should you choose. Tri-State can also deliver the wide array of colored, stamped concrete choices you have.
Cost
Concrete is simply more expensive than asphalt paving, although it may depend on the level of customization you seek. Contact Tri-State Paving for an accurate estimate of what one or both would cost.
