Asphalt patching is a neat way to fix minor damages.

Asphalt pavements of all kinds wear down eventually. One of the reasons they can last in great condition for decades is due todiligent maintenance, fixing damages like cracks, depressions, ruts, raveling, and potholes early on. Sometimes, resurfacing the entire pavement can be the best solution. Asphalt patching is one of the most common types of asphalt repairs. What is asphalt patching? Tri-State Paving will discuss it below!

The Purpose of Asphalt Patching

Asphalt patching replaces or replenishes damaged asphalt in isolated spots on the pavement. It is a way to fix a pothole or depression when you do not need to replace the entire asphalt surface. It saves money, time, and energy, and makes pavements look and function as good as new.

Types of Asphalt Patch Materials

The two types of asphalt patch materials are hot patch and cold patch. Hot patch usesĀ hot mix asphalt, while cold patch uses cold patch/cold mix asphalt. Hot mix asphalt is best for permanent repairs in high-traffic areas, but cold patch is a more temporary solution that is ideal for asphalt repairs in cold weather. Hot mix asphalt requires an ambient temperature of at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit, but you can use cold patch asphalt in weather colder than that. Hot mix asphalt is hot enough to burn skin and requires more equipment to handle, but cold mix asphalt is relatively easier to install.

How to Patch Asphalt

How do you patch damaged asphalt?

The first step is to cut out the damaged spot, leaving nothing but the structurally sound asphalt around it. Remove excess pieces so you have a clean slate to work with.

Next, you can apply tack, a kind of glue for asphalt repairs, around the edges of the patch so that new asphalt will adhere to the old asphalt better.

Then, it’s time to pour on the hot or cold patch asphalt. Pour as much as or a little more than you need. With the proper tool, you can then make the patch level and shovel up excess material.

Use an appropriate asphalt compacting tool to compact the asphalt, ensuring a resilient repair. You can start with the edges and then compact the middle.

Sprinkling sand over the new asphalt patch will protect it as it cures over the next few days.
