Best Time for Hardscape Installations

Summer, spring, winter, or fall? What’s the best hardscaping time of all?

In landscape design, there are hardscapes and softscapes. Hardscapes are the solid, non-living parts, like patios, decks, driveways, and walkways. Softscapes are the living things, namely the plants. At Tri-State Paving, we specialize in hardscapes, along with our asphalt and concrete services for the DOT and commercial premises. Not every project is suited for any time of year. What’s the best time for hardscape installations?

Two Best Times for Hardscape Installations

Early Spring

One of the best times of the year for hardscape installations is early spring, just before the perennial plants begin to revive and fill the landscape again. Before vegetation starts its growing season again and insects and other animals return, it is a great time to do some hardscape renovations. The ground is not likely to freeze during this time and is not too wet to deal with either.

Fall

Fall can be a busy time of year, but the sweet spot might be after you have settled into the school season again or ended summer vacation days, and just before other holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas arrive. Even so, winter does not officially begin until mid-December, so you technically have plenty of time to carry out your project in fall.

Like spring, autumn lends moist, cool soil with which to work. It is not water-logged and hot nor frozen solid. The weather is also mild, which is the most comfortable kind for outdoor projects. Plants are starting to become dormant, and animals are heading south or readying for hibernation.

What About Summer and Winter?

Summer and winter are also beneficial times to conduct your hardscaping projects. It all depends on what your schedule is. In Maryland, it can get hot and humid or freezing cold, but the weather is hardly ever so severe that you cannot install a new patio or driveway.

Plus, if you are looking to install an asphalt driveway, summer is the best time to do it. Asphalt installation cannot happen unless the weather is above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are looking to install a new asphalt driveway, summer is the prime time to get started. If you are thinking about other hardscape installations, now is also a great time to pursue them or start planning your designs.
