Is it possible to put concrete over asphalt? Here’s the answer.

Is it possible to pour concrete over asphalt? Perhaps your asphalt driveway is looking old and tired, and you would like a change. On the other hand, it could be an asphalt driveway that is in relatively decent condition, and you would also like a change. Instead of tearing up the asphalt driveway, it would be cheaper to install a concrete layer right on top. But is it possible? Can you really pour concrete over asphalt? It is not as straightforward as you might think.

Can You Pour Concrete Over Asphalt?

While it is possible to pour concrete over an asphalt driveway, how it turns out all depends on that asphalt base. It could turn out well or poorly. Even if you have a decent asphalt driveway already, the surface requires preparation to get the best results. Therefore, you can, but let’s take a look at what it takes to get a desirable result.

Six Requirements to Pour Concrete Over Asphalt Correctly

First, your asphalt driveway needs to be in sound condition. It needs to be structurally sound, without major cracks, drainage issues, or wear and tear. If the asphalt pavement is not too cracked, thin, or defunct, then it is a perfectly solid foundation for a layer of concrete pavement.

Second, the asphalt surface must be in the best condition for concrete pavement to adhere to it. It needs to be as clean as possible; usually, pressure-washing gets the job done. You also need to mill the surface. If the surface is too smooth, the concrete will have little to grip onto.

Third, the weather must be right. It must be above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and there must be no rain in the forecast for at least two days. The concrete needs time to cure, and rain will ruin it.

Fourth, the asphalt layer must be level. New concrete pavements usually sit on gravel beds, so you can level your asphalt pavement with gravel if need be.

Fifth, poured concrete needs a frame. Otherwise, it will pour into the lawn. This frame is usually wood.

Sixth, you can get even better results when working with a professional. See what Tri-State Paving can do for you in Maryland and Delaware!
