Work zones count on drivers and workers to stay safe. Here’s what drivers can do!

When roads are under construction, it can be a difference between life and death how all parties carry themselves on the road. Construction workers have their own responsibilities to keep operations safe, such as wearing high-visibility garments, communicating well, and maintaining visibility. Of course, road work safety is a two-way street. Road work safety is number one for drivers, too!

Road Work Safety Tips for Drivers

Remember the Responsibility

It is easier to do what you do when you know there is a good reason behind it. You can have no question about the reason to maintain road work safety as a driver. Construction work can be dangerous, and it is even more dangerous with the exposure to traffic. An accident can be life-changing.

Be Prepared to Drive Great

You don’t need to worry. Be prepared to drive well; don’t drive if you are compromised by any influence such as alcohol, fatigue, or drowsiness-inducing medications. Get a great night’s rest and avoid driving on an empty stomach or dehydrated. Be at peace in your mind so you can focus on the road.

Drive Safe, Not Edgy

Do not overestimate yourself as a driver or think it’s okay to bend the rules a bit, especially around road work zones. Follow the rules of the road, use your turn signals, avoid changing lanes, and don’t cut people off, weave through traffic, or worry about any problematic drivers.

Slow Down around Road Work

Even if the road’s speed limit is usually higher, it will behoove you to follow the construction zone’s speed limit. The work zone should have signs regarding speed limits. Slower traffic is safer traffic.

Be Alert! Limit Distractions.

Don’t follow all the rules on auto pilot, in your mind or with your vehicle’s technology. Be alert and be in full control. If you can’t focus, limit distractions like the radio or bright direct sunlight. If you can’t talk and drive at once, don’t be shy about asking to concentrate on the road. Road workers will thank you!
