Look out for these pavement problems to keep your business looking great!

Business owners with commercial property may have parking lots and driveways to attend to. If you are in charge of managing a business parking lot or driveway, it is worth it to look out for these types of asphalt damage. When you do, you can catch problems quickly before they become a hazard to motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Common Types of Asphalt Damage

Alligator Cracks

There are so many kinds of asphalt cracks, and they reflect different types of asphalt damage. One of the most common types is alligator cracking. As the name implies, the pattern of the cracks looks like the outline of alligator skin. Its cause could be wear and tear, improper installation, or excessive loading.

Reflection Cracks

Reflection cracks are cracks that reflect cracks underneath the surface layer. The subsurface may be the original surface layer covered up by more asphalt.

Upheaval

An upheaval is a part of the asphalt that has risen up and split open. It happens because of water damage that got below the surface. The freeze-thaw cycle causes the water to expand and contract as it freezes and melts, causing the swelling and cracking.

Shoving

Have you ever seen ridges and dips in asphalt pavement? These malformations would be called “shoving.” It is what happens to asphalt when heavy vehicles follow the same path along the road for a long time.

Raveling

Raveling is when you see gravel coming loose from the pavement. It happens as the binding agent, bitumen, oxidizes and breaks down, releasing the gravel that gives it heft. It would happen because of old age or improper installation, but, like other types of asphalt damage, it is easy to repair.

Potholes

Everyone knows about pesky potholes! These minor holes expose a sublayer and the hole that formed underneath the top layer. Repairing potholes is easier than you might think. If you have potholes to repair, contact Tri-State Paving to fix them before they damage your vehicle or cause a personal injury.

Blowouts

Blowouts are even worse; a whole, wide patch of your pavement may be completely gone. The top layer and the sublayer have failed and fallen away, similar to a collapsed sinkhole.
