There’s more than one type of asphalt in road construction! Learn about them here.

You would be surprised how many variations of asphalt there are. Yes, that’s right–the black hard stuff that makes up our driveways, streets, highways, and parking lots, and those examples are just the start. Asphalt is more than just the blacktop on the surface; let’s dive into all the different types of asphalt in road construction that might apply to your Maryland roads. Reliable Contracting knows all about asphalt and is happy to work with you on your road construction or repair project!

Types of Asphalt Mixes

  • Hot mix asphalt: Hot mix asphalt is a standard asphalt mix for highways and other high-traffic roads. One must heat it to 300-350 degrees Fahrenheit for it to be installed correctly.
  • Warm mix asphalt: Warm mix asphalt is suitable for asphalt installations occurring in warm or cool weather. It must be heated to 200-250 degrees for correct installation.
  • Cold patch asphalt: Cold patch asphalt is excellent for cold weather. It is a great way to fix potholes and other damage while it’s too cold to apply hot mix asphalt.
  • Porous asphalt: Standard asphalt lets stormwater run off into the nearest soil, reservoir, or storm drain. Porous asphalt lets that water seep through it into a gravel drainage bed below.
  • Recycled asphalt: Recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) helps save on asphalt installation costs and the production of new materials. However, it is considered slightly less enduring than new asphalt.

Types of Asphalt Grades

There are also different grades of asphalt, as in the quality. Asphalt is also graded in the sense that it slopes just enough in the right directions to let rainwater flow off of it at a controlled rate.

  • Penetration graded asphalt
  • Viscosity graded asphalt
  • Performance graded asphalt

Types of Asphalt Roads

Asphalt roads have layers; they have a base, a subbase, and a top layer, at the most basic level. The more traffic you anticipate for this road, the more pavement layers it will have. There are different asphalt layer formats for neighborhood streets, roads, highways, etc.
