Summer is one of the most prolific times for road work onhighways and side streets andparking lots alike. People are also out and about on vacation or enjoying the lovely weather. In times like these, when traffic is at its peak and so isroad construction, it pays to take care. While road workers are responsible for following safety practices of their own, there are also work zone safety tips for drivers to follow for a great road trip.
Slow Down
The first step is to slow down. You have a lot more control over your vehicle when you are moving slowly. While you don’t necessarily have to move at a snail’s pace, you should slow down enough that you can follow the other work zone safety tips for drivers below.
Pay Attention
Be alert and pay attention to the road. Be alert to any sudden changes in the traffic pattern and rules given by the work crew. Avoid distractions; distractions are one of the top causes of driving accidents in general. Do not start eating, drinking, looking at your radio or phone, or looking at other passengers. Give your utmost attention to the route you are traveling.
Follow the Rules Promptly
Does the road work zone have specific rules to follow? You don’t want to be that annoying Maryland driver; heed the work zone rules as soon as possible. For example, take care to follow the work zone speed limit, the directions of the traffic flagger if present, and the lane changes as soon as convenient.
Don’t Ride on the Bumper
Don’t ride on the bumper of the car in front of you! While it is a habit that many are guilty of, it is not worth doing when driving through a work zone, even if you do it all the time and don’t care about the rules. If you drive on someone’s bumper in a work zone, you might not be able to divert from an accident in time.
Research the Route Ahead of Time
Are you planning your route ahead of time? If you notice that there is road work along one of your potential routes, it can help to take a different route to lessen work zone traffic and possibly save time on your trip.
