Asphalt pavement is standard across the world for creating roads, parking lots, trails, and driveways for public, commercial, and private transportation and parking. It is the most recycled material in the world and one of the most affordable construction materials ever. Over time, it disintegrates. Oxidation from UV light and deterioration from traffic loads and weather require asphalt pavement to get regular maintenance. These are the six main asphalt pavement repair methods.
1. Sealcoating
Asphalt sealcoating is the application of bitumen over the pavement’s surface to refresh and protect it against oxidation and water damage. Sealcoating is more linked to maintenance rather than direct repairs, but is a useful service that prolongs asphalt lifespan and creates smooth pavement.
2. Crack Filling
Asphalt crack filling is a standard service for making small repairs as needed. Asphalt cracks can form due to heavy traffic loads, pavement age, and moisture damage, among other reasons;if it is merely a surface issue, asphalt contractors can fill up these cracks and make the pavement as good as new.
3. Infrared Repairs
Infrared repairs use heat to soften, patch, and reform specific damaged areas. It is a great way to reuse existing pavement on site, only replacing what is necessary. Infrared repairs do a fantastic job of creating a seamless repair.
4. Patching
Asphalt patching is another method for repairing targeted damaged areas. It works especially well for potholes. The contractors can cut out the damaged area as far as the damage goes and replace it with new materials.
5. Resurfacing
Asphalt resurfacing involves milling (removing) the top asphalt layer when widespread damage is present and replacing it with a new top layer. Resurfacing is naturally best for older pavements with worn-out surfaces and intact sublayers.
6. Full-Depth Repair
A full-depth asphalt pavement repair is the most in-depth repair of all. Contractors can pulverize damaged materials to use for new base layers, saving resources and costs.
